DC Traction Chopper Overhaul
In 2009, Transtech Melbourne was commissioned to conduct an overhaul program for over 150 AEG DC Traction Chopper systems for Melbourne’s A class trams. Due to external pressures beyond the control of our client, the timeline was reduced to less than 50% of the original time allocated. In spite of this, we successfully completed the project on time and to a great level of customer satisfaction.
The project involved:
- Design and manufacture of safe handling and rotating equipment for the 450kg equipment enclosures.
- Safe dismantling and testing of all power electronics, PCBs, electrical components, cable looms, etc.
- Environmentally sound cleaning of complete enclosures.
- Testing of power semiconductor characteristics such as forward and reverse leakage current, holding current and forward voltage drop. These tests were performed at both ambient temperature and also at 100 degrees C on our purpose built facility.
- Strict documentation of all testing results, overhaul procedures and works conducted to each unit.
- Complete unit testing with high voltage and simulation testing.
The benefits of such a project had been truly realised by our customer following the overhauls, and as a result we have commenced a gradual overhaul of the Z3 tram traction choppers also.
